Lacey: I must say, dears, this little chat has been most enlightening. I had no idea the gay community was facing so many problems. As you can imagine, this is all new ground for me. We never had any gays among our family and friends. Well, no, actually, that's not true. Dick's Uncle Orville came out of the closet last year. He's a federal judge in Chicago. Man: That's great! What made him do it? Lacey: High interest rates. His butler tried to blackmail him, and he couldn't afford it.

Going public is the most legal way to deal with a blackmailer, and often the bravest. OTOH, you should never blackmail someone who solves their problems with murder.

Federal judges in Chicago or elsewhere don’t get paid enough to afford a butler. And it was a lot less in 1982. Of course, Uncle Orville might have had family money.
