This was a recurrent joke in the early days, Robotman striking up a conversation with an appliance.

Yeah, E.B. is definitely a Suspiciously Similar Substitute. I was the one who put the Monty entry in there, too.

Monty’s “humor” has a cruel streak, doesn’t it? I hope E.B. finds happiness, whether with a vacuum cleaner, a fireplug, or a real lady-robot!

    Dukedoug…

I have no idea where you made that comment or who replied….but “fireplug”, in the US, is a rather quaint term for what on an actual_street_ is almost always called a fire hydrant nowadays. It was common a hundred years ago, and some people do still say it…. especially humorously…but a notice, say from the fire department, or a news story, would use “hydrant.”But the word “fireplug” survives as a fairly common description for a shape … especially of a person, or sometimes an animal…Short, stocky, sturdy….with few curves, and usually, rather broad, short, legs and arms, and square shoulders.

I think most people do know it comes from the shape of a fire hydrant…. but it’s possible some don’t.HTH
