Many women of that time had similar jobs. My grandmother worked at one place where she took toothbrushes off of fish and put them in boxes. She never knew where those boxes were shipped to.

Hey those toothbrushes aren’t just going to strap themselves to the fish, y’know!.I just want to know who was supplying the straps.

It wasn’t easy, being the sole support of her family…

She didn’t carp…. at least she was working for scale, and she saw many immigrants flounder.

In those days there wasn’t even a minnow Mum wage.

(I don’t blame you for wondering whether there’s any tooth to this story.)

It was said they were often paid in fins from some loan shark. I think this was an old wive’s tail. Don’t be gillable and believe everything that comes down the pike.

Too much fishy business, but I heard they had a whale of a time on the line. If you couldn’t keep your head above water, they’d school you. But best of all, the job would net you some big clams if you dove right into it. It just goes to show you that brushing up on your work can bring you waves of success.

Her hard work and sacrifice paid off and she raised a son who became a surgeon and did the first successful grafting of a monkey’s hand onto the forehead of an albino.
