I live in Texas but a while back I was visiting friends in New Jersey and when my friend needed gas we got service like this. When I remarked on it I learned it was against the law to pump your own gas. I guess the service station industry had a very powerful lobby in the state capital.
Briefly in the late ‘90s there was a gas station outside of Fairbanks, Alaska that employed pump jockeys, but they only pumped gas. By the mid ’00s when I went back for a visit there were a couple of other stations in Fairbanks doing it. Don’t know if it’s still a thing up there now or not, but they’re paying a dollar more per gallon than the national average these days.
