I just read that one of the reasons physicians started the practice of bleeding their patients was because they thought menstruation was an effective cleansing of bad blood that could also be useful in treating disease in men. It’s amazing how short a time ago bleeding was accepted medical practice. It’s sad that it was sometimes better to be poor and not to be treated by a doctor, because your body healed itself in many cases and was not damaged by fashionable quack treatments available to the wealthy.

Actually, the 8-14 days of PMS prior to the period was also a do-no-mess time.
