Pete loves the attention. It’s the accountability thingy he has a problem with. He SHOULD be in Cooperstown, though, and he might love the lead of being a roving minor league batting instructor. He could even do autograph signings en route to his next assignment in Billings or Hickory or wherever.
In light of the shenanigans and substance abuse of modern day players, Rose is a saint. Based solely on his on field performance, the man definitely should be in the Hall of Fame. I believe the “sportswriters” voting against him are bloody hypocrites. Pete Rose has been punished enough. FREE PETE ROSE !
I guess I’m in the minority and think Pete Rose should stay banned. The Hall of Fame is a privilege that he lost when he gambled. Let a lifetime ban stay a lifetime ban.
The Rule has been in place since Day 1. Thou shalt not gamble on baseball. Rose knew and understood this. I sincerely believe that one of society’s biggest problems today is we are too forgiving when things like this occur and call them mistakes or errors in judgement. It was conscious choice to break the rules for his personal gratification. let him live with the consequences.
@Linguist The problem being that steroids/PED’s and the like were not, until recently, illegal. The Players Union fought long and hard to not allow their members to be tested. It took some players to speak out against this no testing policy to allow the new policy to take hold. They felt as though they were being unfairly lumped in with those who did cheat. As for Rose, HE BET ON BASEBALL. Period End of story. It’s expressly forbidden and everyone who works/plays for a baseball team at any level, from Low A to the Majors are reminded of that. There’s a sign telling them that.
Put up with? HA! Being banned has kept his name in the headlines (and marketability high) for much longer than if he’d been inducted years ago. If he had never been banned, he would have gone in after 5 years and then largely forgotten, just like the majority of HoFers. In many ways being banned has been good for him.
jbmlaw: Jackson was probably the only honest one on the team. You don’t throw a series by winning two games. He was punished for not being a ruthless capitalist’s fink, and nothing else.

Is this the time to talk about Shoeless Joe? Hasn’t the lifetime ban technically expired?

Personal responsibility. Those two words are like garlic to a vampire with far too many people these days. Pete Rose made his own bed.

And now he has a job on Fox Sports! I’ll kiss baseball goodbye if he’s allowed in the Hall Of Fame.
