It’s good to remember that Trump was in charge of fund raising for the previous presidential candidate, Willard the ChickenHawk.
Also, in that election, every Republican candidate traveled to New York to meet with Trump and get his blessing.
So, Trump didn’t just land on or in the Republican party suddenly; he’s been there for years as a power broker. And the Republican party doesn’t give a darn about his criticism of McCain, that’s just a handy issue. They are seriously worried about his criticism of other Republican candidates like Bush and how THAT will resonate with Republican voters.
Remember, the RNC head tried to get him to ‘tone it down’ well before he said anything about McCain. RNC is not defending McCain; they tried to primary him.
