Rat: What do you have there, Pig?
Pig: It's Robby the robot from the 1950s. It can do math computations, research anything, and even talks.
Rat: So it does less than my phone.
Pig: Robby hates this era.
Modern electronic technology has come so far. Gone are the days of errors and problems. Remember how records used to skip, and recordings repeat. Because we are so sophisticated and advanced, nothing like that ever happens now. No repeats at all.
News flash: For the second day, the doppelgänger hacker is on the prowl! Whatever you post will be repeated. Just delete one of the posts, and all will be well.
I evidently wasn’t into robot stuff in the 1950’s (and didn’t have a TV till ‘64). To my mind, the most memorable robot was Marvin, of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy . Now, he had personality (not one we’d want to spend much time with, but personality nonetheless).
SORRY… THAT IS NOT ROBBIE THE ROBOT. WHERE IS HIS DOMED HEAD AND THE TWIRLY THINGS ON SIDES AND THE BUBBLE ARMS AND THE PIANO KEY COMPUTERS IN THE HEAD. SORRY YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG………
GO SEE THE MOVIE FORBIDDEN PLANET. GREAT CLASSIC.
IT STARS LESLIE NELSON BEFORE HE BECAME A COMMEDIAN……
@Liverlips:no wonder, since today’s CPUs contain billion transistors. Back in ’69, it was much less, even by using VLSI chips. Even my humble AMD FX has 1.5 billion transistors.

Off to a museum you go.

Unlike that phone, Robby won’t cause you to have a head-on collision or walk into a mall fountain.

Oh yeah? And can your phone pick up a scantily clad lady and look cool 60 years from now?
SashaW over 9 years ago
Nope, that isn’t him.

No.

Even from a bygone era Robby still does twenty times what Rat’s useless phone can do.

If that’s supposed to be the robot from Forbidden Planet, it can still do a lot more than any of today’s computers.

The Apollo moon landers had less computing power than today’s smart phones.

Robby is still more impressive than Rat with his phone will ever be. Long live the robot from the 1950s!

Robby does not need a signal to operate.
Plumbob Wilson over 9 years ago
Hate to be a buzzkill, but that looks nothing like Robby. Doesn’t even have a plexiglass dome for a head.
mammamoonbeam over 9 years ago
No worries Robby. I don’t care what the dang things can do. I STILL won’t get one! (Fact)

@gopher, one of the best SF movies of all time.

In the movie Robbie could create bottles of bourbon by the truckload – Rat would appreciate that.

Robbie can go to the fridge and get Pig a beer. Rat’s smartphone can’t do that!

Things are tough all over for robots.

So like our society – “You’re old. Now go away where we can’t see you.”

Robbie (different spelling) was also the name of the robot and title character of Isaac Asimov’s first robot story, written in 1939.

Robby the Robot’s services were no longer required.

Did Don Ameche expect all this when he (with a little help from Henry Fonda) invented the telephone?!?
nerdhoof over 9 years ago
Does less than your phone? I haven’t seen any phones with arms and legs.

Heck—remember those communicators they had in the 23rd century Star Trek?
They can’t even take pictures!

Isaac Asimov’s Robbie was so much more fun!
