These large bookstore chains usually have a magazine section, too, Jeri .. you could scoop-up a massive pile of glamour & teen mags to use as a carpet for your bedroom.
I feel sorry for people who don’t like to read. As a kid I read every scifi book in our library. Because of tv and other distractions I read less than I used to, but I enjoy my book club and have hundreds of books in my audible collection.
The salesperson set himself up for the fall here. It would not take long to figure out Jeri is not a leisure reader and question her about whats she enjoys. Then he could have directed her towards fashion oriented publications.

About her age I was given a gift certificate to a Bible book store
A helpful clerk could tell I was finding nothing of interest, she asked me a few questions and directed me to the Chronicles of Narnia
To this day I am grateful to that woman
