I always needed my desk in the first row so I could read the blackboard (or green board) and hear the teacher. But it also meant being more visible so I couldn’t get away with misbehavior.
In my 9th year I had a desk in the first row, but I still managed to remove half of the screws, and drill an inch-wide hole through the desktop without the Jesuit priests noticing a thing.
I always took a desk in the front row, for 2 reasons: 1) I’m short & want to see; 2) sitting closer to the teacher made it harder for kids to do hurtful things to me. Call it a survival skill.

MIne was in the back row and didn’t learn a thing that year. Besides hated the teacher so full of herself.

Another good thing about the front row is the teacher usually looks over you when he/she/it calls on someone to answer a question.
