    It may be trite to go to wikipedia, but it has an entry on trombones that says [in part]

    “The most common [… trombone …] is a non-transposing instrument pitched in B♭, […thus we get the 2B reference…] The once common E♭ …. alto trombone … is now enjoying a resurgence due to its lighter sonority”

    When I was in 6th grade my mom went without lunch so I could have a trombone.It was a King student model. I could barely reach 6th position back then.I still have and treasure it.
