The Buckets by Greg Cravens for September 19, 2015

Guys, Sheila's essay is full of plans she already has for next summer. Do you know what you're doing next summer? My folks haven't said yet. But I figured the essay is whatever we want. I'm writing about building a race car. I wrote song lyrics as my essay- about our band making it big in the teachers begging us to be our roadies. By the end of next summer, I probably will have wandered into traffic or forgotten how to breathe, I'm so boring.

Uh oh, Toby’s feeling challenged to live up to standards he didn’t know existed. It’s a crisis of confidence. Will he find the inner resources to meet this challenge? Will he seek (gasp) advice from an adult? Stay tuned.

His friends have caught on to the assignment perhaps that will stimulate Toby to use his imagination too.

It’s really not fair, after the epic summer Toby just had, to make him write about an imagined summer.

I guess writing an essay on what one did during the summer is standard for comic strips. All the time I started school, not once were we asked to write such an essay.

“I probably will have” is a pretty sophisticated construction for a teen who’s virtually illiterate.
