It’s like an explanation I once heard for life insurance. The company makes a bet that you’ll live long enough to pay more in premiums than the amount of the policy. If you die young, you win!
Now that can be the best attitude or excuse for making it as a winner. Kinda hard to define her success. She must realize that they let her down in a way.
