Ketchup originated in China as a boiled down brine of pickled fish called ketsiap. Can I bring my ball? In April 2014, Iv, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, was called for jury duty in Cumberland County, New Jersey. In 1919, Enterprise, Alabama, erected an elaborate monument in the middle of town to honor the boll weevil!

And how did a dog get called into jury duty anyway?
MJKesquire over 9 years ago
There was a segment about the boll weevil just a week or2 ago on the TV show Mysteries at the Monument.

If the dog’s five years old, shouldn’t its name be “V” instead of “IV”?!?

The trick isn’t getting your pet onto the jury roster, but getting them off. I hear that about 90% of all pets in Chicago are registered voters who vote more regularly than the bulk of the population.

Yes and they always seem to vote Democrat…huh go figure!

IV in medical parlance is short for intravenous. :)

And in English, ‘Ketsiap’ means ‘kill taste’. It was originally what you put on food that tasted awful so you could get it down.

The South grew cotton. Cotton was a very bad crop, as it depleted the soil. George Washing Carver, a black man, suggested that the cotton growers plant peanuts, which enrich the soil, but one can eat only so many peanuts. So he started thinking of other things to do with peanut by-products. The boll weevil was an insect that ruined cotton crops. After a devastating year of boll weevil damage, the farmers of Enterprise switched to peanuts. The peanut crop was so much more profitable than cotton, they erected that statue.

When I was a kid there were other catsups or ketchup, besides the familiar tomato kind. The only other kind I can recall was grape and I think it was made from green grapes. My Mom made tomato catsup, but it was nothing like the goo from a bottle. Mom only bought catsup when my step brothers came to visit. The lids on the bottles were steel, then aluminum. You had to wipe the black gunk off before you could pour it.

Dr. Carter and his laboratory invented many things from the peanut, including peanut butter. The list is long. I think it’s sad that the town erected a statue of anything, rather than a statue of Dr. Carter. When Dr. Carter traveled in the South, a white friend went along and Dr. Carter went as the friend’s valet. The only way Dr. Carter could ride the train. When the porter came around, Dr. Carter would kneel at his friends feet, polishing his friend’s boots.

A couple of thousand years ago the Romans had something similar also made from fish. I forget the name.

I remember ketchup bottles with the caps that had to be pried off. Also, I thought that ketchup was a type of chutney, originally from India.
