Good golly, fresh air, exploration, gaining new knowledge, tactile involvement and the blazing glory of autumn—come on Calvin. Grab Hobbes, hop in that wagon and race down that hill into the woods and discovery. Of course, you could always just watch Spongebob…..
And when you go into a neighbour’s yard to get one leaf—one leaf! you will be a) chased by their dog; b) screamed at from an open window; c)threatened with the police, fines and similar mayhem. And you’re only six.
There are a lot more types of trees than most people realize. Take for example, Oaks. To most people there are just “oaks”, but within the Oak family there are red, scarlet, pin, bur, white, swamp white, and lots of less common types like willow oaks (which have totally different looking leaves). The same is true of the Maple family, and others. Fifty is a lot, but there are probably well over 50 types growing in pretty much any area. You are correct, though, that the assignment didn’t specify “tree leaves”, so bushes and other plant types would make gathering 50 different ones easy.
1-Calvin can do this in an afternoon thanks to the giant woods in his backyard. 2-I had a project like this, in the 6th grade, and we only needed 25 leaves, then again I live in the city so there are fewer species of trees that we had access to.
If she said go find 50 leafs for just trees then I would say that would insane as their are not that many tree in the area you live in that would be able to get you 50 leafs. Also he better watch out the bad leafs like poison ivy and others.
Have mom take him to walk through the Arboretum, and they very well might find 50 kinds of trees. In a neighborhood that would be a stretch unless he has quite a few neighbors that have a taste for unusual trees. In a normal woods, there isn’t going to be much diversity, just the handful of species that propagate freely in a given area (perhaps a few varieties of oak, ash, maple, and locust). Depending on his choice, he will most likely have to use leaves from bushes, flowers, etc. to get to 50. Still, this can be a fun fall project, and since it involves walking in the woods, I’m not sure why Calvin finds it objectionable. My kids always enjoyed it when we did this, usually at the arboretum. Fall is a great time of year! I love trees, and actually, I once helped pick the trees for an arboretum when it was laid out, and it’s considered one of the best in the state because of the unusual choices we made.
Collecting 50 different kids of leaves? Yep, that’s a life-destroyer for sure. Wormwood is out to get you. Bonus points if you can find a wormwood leaf.

They don’t all have to be from trees, just leaves. It could be done in one weekend, but what happens to Calvin is hilarious.

The leaves can’t just come from trees. Also grasses and bushes too.
Thank you! Miss Wormwood’s instructions didn’t specify “just tree leaves”…

Guess Bill didn’t live in southern California. We only have 2 or 3 native trees in our area near the coast.
