Honesty? He invaded the southern states in an unjustified war, resulting in the deaths of over 600,000 Americans, claiming that he was fighting to end slavery, while he himself was as big a racist as his opponents!
But President Lincoln had made a sworn oath to protect the Constitution of the United States. Unlike some recent immediate past presidents who just simply ignored the constitution. Find a copy of the two volume, “Twenty Years of Congress”, by James G. Blaine. Published in the late 1800s, it will shed some new light on the Civil Rebellion of 1860. Blaine was a moderate literate Republican (!), who was Speaker of the House, senator and held other political offices. Well educated, he taught science, ancient languages and literature before he entered politics. The Republican party is like the old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be.
He did not claim to end slavery, he issued a directive to do so(kind of like to last couple of POTUS). He also said he he had to free some, all, or none, he would do what he had to to maintain control over the South. He also wanted to ship them to South America or Africa, he did NOT want them here(even when they had more generations on our soil than most white Americans did)
Have to admire anyone who would imprison half of the Maryland legislature. Give him credit for freeing the slaves in territories not controlled by the North (but not freeing those living under Northern jurisdiction, e.g., Norfolk, VA or the entire state of Tennessee.)
Thousands of years from now, when we all have slanted eyes, dark hair, and great tans, humans will still find something to argue about. Perhaps ground-pounders will be envious of spacers, or vice-versa.Deep down in the genes, we all have the same African all-mother.

President Lincoln didn’t see the 2 races existing peacefully in the U.S. He was in favor or sending Blacks back to Africa as a long-term solution.
