I only had to explain to each of my boys once that when I said “Would you like to…” that I was being polite, and if they would prefer that I not be so polite I and my large wooden spoon would be happy to oblige them.
Ah the weight of the world. I just had this conversation with my grandson. He thinks that it is terrible that he has to put the dirty dishes in the dish washer. Nothing you say will make them understand, so you just let them carry the weight of the world on their shoulders:-P
In my household it was “It would be nice if someone would…”. So when my father died, my aunt said It would be nice if someone would get a fruit basket while looking right at me (which she still denies). So everyone wondered why I was the one buying a fruit basket.

It is the nature of adolescent boys to be lazy. It is the nature of the parents of adolescent boys to make them do the work anyway.

Isn’t it amazing how people without kids of their own, think they know how to raise children?
