I’m guessing they got the equivalent of a “Cease and Desist” order from Doyle’s lawyers, as it was “Pussyfoot Sam” from here on out. In 1901 there was “Sherlock Sam” and then of course "Sherlocko the Monk, " but this was the only unauthorized use of the name that I know of in the comics pages.

An early example of the Doyle estate protecting its copyright, or did they change it back the next week?

Not “the Doyle estate” at this date. Doyle was still alive and writing, and even “A Study in Scarlet” itself was only 26 years old.
