Sheep dogs here means livestock protection dogs (NOT herding dogs) and that is exactly how they are trained. We’re doing that now with a new Karakachan puppy.

The herding instinct is strong in some breeds. We had to break our border collie out of the habit of trying to herd the grandchildren.

Had an Australian shepard that “Did NOT get it” when it came to horses. First kick – knocked his teeth out. Toward the end of his life, he got nailed in the head – knocked an eye loose – until the next kick knocked it clean out of his head. He stayed on the porch after that. Poor old Domino – barking door mat.
