Destiny always wins.

This reminds me of the last scene at the end of ACT I of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. Charlie Brown sees a leaf clinging to a tree and waxes philosophical:“You know, I don’t know if you’ll understand this or not, but sometimes, even when I’m feeling very low, I’ll see some little thing that will somehow renew my faith. Something like that leaf, for instance – clinging to its tree despite wind and storm. You know, that makes me think that courage and tenacity are about the greatest values a man can have. Suddenly my old confidence is back and I know things aren’t half as bad as I make them out to be. Suddenly I know that with the strength of his convictions a man can move mountains, and I can proceed with full confidence in the basic goodness of my fellow man. I know that now. I know it.” [As Charlie Brown exits the stage, the leaf falls from the tree.]

The ad at right reminds me I don’t miss Jonny Hart’s proselytizing at all

There’s an O.Henry story where a woman has decided she’ll die when the last leaf falls that she can see from her window. The tree branch she is looking at is against a wall, and a young man climbs up and paints a leaf on the wall itself. She eventually decides to get better and live.

@Kaputnik—I remember that story! but I remember (or maybe I’ve it confused with another O. Henry) —either the painter dies from exposure, or the painter was older and died from exposure. . .anyway, O. Henry could sure “spin” those stories. My favorites have always been “The Gift of the Magi” and “Ransom of Red Chief.”

The leaf is dead already. Burn it, or compost it.

I have a nectarine tree in the back yard that loses it’s leaves right about this time of year. The day before the gardeners come I shake the hell out of it.

Oh no, not too strong at all! My comment was to reflect on how some folks don’t recognize a comic for its content; i.e., its satire or some other obscure concept. I am pretty sure we are on the same team; or at least the same league…

I’m the last leaf on the tree. Autumn took the rest, but they won’t take me, I’m the lastleaf onthe tree.
