Because to a kid, a day is much longer than it is to an adult. To them, a day seems like long enough to do almost anything. They haven’t learned how to judge time fully.
Both my sister and I did this to our parents regularly. I even volunteered my mother to chaperon my class to several functions outside the school several times. To avoid ever doing that again, my parents started their own business.

Why do kids always do that?! Wait until the day (or night) of an event?! Always tell your parents about things like that in advance! (like a month)
