Chalkie’s wrong again ! Rip Van Winkle wasn’t a striker for Holland. He was a sweeper and played for Ajax , as well as the Netherlands national team from 1981 – 1985.
An unfortunate fall, whilst ice skating on the canal in De Walletjes, abruptly ended his career. The ’Orange" were crushed !
Today’s strip is a disguised “Trivia Quiz” strip, wherein the “humor” is a very dumb comment. Dumb characters always encourage lazy writing, which is why I’ve never liked them in comic strips, sitcoms, movies, plays (well, except for Dogberry and Bottom!), books, operas, whatever. I would have had Andy say something like “To judge from Flo’s looks, I must’ve slept MUCH longer than twenty years!”
I once came up with a way of describing the difference between Superman and Batman and how they work. In one comic Lex Luthor was trying to move into Gotham, he figured that since he knew how to deal with Superman, the could deal with Batman, after all they’re both heroes and they both play by the rules. Imagine his suprise when he realized that Superman plays by the rules of American football, Batman plays by the rules of Rugby.
