I doubt anyone living today has any idea how significant Nixon’s visit to China in the early 70s would have on American manufacturing today! All we were looking for at the time was cheaper products for a hungry for bargains US consumer population! We never gave a thought to how this would impact high paying manufacturing jobs in the US!
Then, when Gerald Ford signed the first “Fair Trade Agreement” law into effect, thereby preventing manufacturers from setting prices based upon “their” cost of manufacture, and opening the market to competition from economies across the planet; i.e., China, India, Taiwan, etc., suddenly a shirt that should cost $10 was offered for $5, and we scooped them up by the barrel full!
All at the same time our fellow workers were losing their jobs producing shirts at the factory in the neighborhood town…

That is the sad truth of modern retail… a product can be discontinued if it doesn’t pull it’s own weight…
