What age is Betty’s son? He looks about as tall as my eight-year-old, and I’m certainly not getting her a debit card anytime soon…

Theoretically, a debit card is safer than carrying cash, but just like pocket money, when you’ve spent it all, it’s gone. As long as he can keep a mental record of what he’s spending, it’s a good idea. And once he comes up short a time or two, he’ll learn to keep track!

I wouldn’t give any child a debit card. Just give them an allowance like other parent. Just because other kids have debit cards, doesn’t mean mine would have one. But then again, what if those other kids just took it from their parents’ wallets just to make themselves look cool?

He’s going to be surprised to learn that before he can take money OUT he has to put money IN. The way things are going, it’s probably best he learn to manage a debit card now. It could be a help when he heads off to college sometime in the next century.
