Unfortunately, either tactic might work – it depends on the type of person who’s making the decision. Claire’s tactic is successful for the people working for my spouse, but Dara’s tactic seemed to work for his predecessor. In my last job, it was a little of both. The one that amazed me was a guy who did a terrible job and seemed to regularly leave his brain at home, but still has a job because he’s the only breadwinner in his family and would be sent back to his risky home country if deported. It seemed that the ones who were laid off were the ones who had a working spouse.
