Mike: Apparently the housing market is out of control. These are the only rentals he had in our price range. The agent told me we may have to settle for Hoboken or Jersey City to get the studio space you want. And even those areas are getting trendy and expensive. JJ: Wait a minute, Michael, listen to this. "Bright, spacious, two-bedroom duplex, $600." That's perfect! Where is it? Mike: Pennsylvania. He says it's the next New Jersey. JJ: Hmm... what do you bet it's already spoiled?

In 2013, Crain’s Chicago Business said Chicago had over 33,000 vacant homes. They are available, no rent, no landlord. Just reinstall all of the fixtures, appliances, wiring and plumbing plus remove the corpses of drug addicts and there you are, home sweet home.

When this was penned, a raw loft in Los Angeles could be rented for $400-$800 That would be over 1000sq ft, maybe even a private bathroom 12 ft ceilings and a view of the LosAngeles River or the Alameda corridor.

In Detroit they are giving artists and writers free homes that need to be rehabbed. Not an artist… you can buy a house for $500 to 2K$.
