Frazz has often been compared to Calvin & Hobbes, particularly because of the similarity in drawing nd lettering style in both strips, and the idea that Frazz is a rendering of an adult version of Calvin. Frazz artist Jef Mallett has acknowledged Watterson as an influence but nothing more (scroll down to the comment titled “Bowie, Md.: Submitted for your consideration: “).
Frazz’s author denies the similarities, but I still suspect Frazz is Calvin all grown up. And his lady friend is Susie Derkins. The similarities are just too uncanny.
I never thought Frazz was that amusing. But I think Calvin is a scream, and often a creative bull’s-eye or breakthrough. And I recognize a certain coincidental coiffure …
It’s amusing to me that the Calvin & Hobbes re-runs are in sync with what Cory Thomas is doing now. The conjunction of the Calvin-on-the-lam story-arc’s re-run schedule with the date of this new Watch Your Head is going to be tough for comic-strip wonks to trace in a few years, or decades.
