The flag pole in “A Christmas Story” was hollow and sealed with a vaccuum pump attached to a valve. There was a hole where the kid stock his tongue. Suction held his tongue to the pole, not freezing.
My mom froze her tongue to the pump handle. Probably around 1925. Her dad was there and had some water (cold) to free her quickly.
I inherited her tendency to ignore parental direction. When I was 4, I touched an electric charcoal starter my dad was testing at the kitchen table after it had turned back to black. They told me it was still hot. They were right.
mr_shermanOK, so I analyzed the “trick”, such as it was. That does not alter the fact that the sticking phenomenon can be observed at other temperatures at which water (saliva, etc.) can freeze quickly. Of course the boiling point will not coincide at any other point, and indeed will vary widely with the surrounding pressure, including occurring below freezing temperatures (how freeze-drying is done) but I don’t think anyone goes to -40 to do it because of economic considerations.
This is beginning to sound like it belongs in Frazz today.

packratjohnIs the trick that the thermometers read the same in both systems? The phenomenom can be observed at significantly higher temperatures.
