I think the joke is that Steve is stepping off the roof, never mind that the “roof” is barely off the ground. The others are going to stop him taking the plunge.
I once knew a family that suicide was a way out for them whenever they decided life was too hard they ended it.I met them through a friend who married one of the girls, beautiful and a real genius. They drove over 100 miles to where I lived at the time to ask my why I didn’t commit suicide. My life happened to be in the toillet at that time, but I wouldn’t flush. Sometime later they both suicided. They’ve been dead since the early 80s and I’m commenting on comments on a comic strip. I’m a time traveler, hellbent in getting as far into the future as I can. I had a lot of the old days, and quite frankly, they sucked. Number 76 coming up in a few days..
Old Texan75, I briefly met someone in the late 70’s who was a small-time pot dealer. He and his wife had their whole house decorated for Christmas year round, because that was the happiest time of their lives. I heard a few years later that he committed suicide because he couldn’t pay his supplier. All that Christmas cheer did him no good.I’m 63 and just got my second knee replacement. I always read a lot of science fiction. Some family and friends have died, but I want to hang around to see what happens next.

I’m confused — are they trying to stop him, or to tie him up so he can’t swim?

I can’t tell it they are tying to save him or trying to push him.

’Cause suicide is painless…It brings on many changes…And I can take or leave it, if I please…
