Not sure about a rat. But it looks like there are a couple of pigs in this picture.

Found the rat… that makes at least three.

Four, if Verl is also taking food home.

Friend of mine lived in a low-income senior apartment building.

Residents could cook in their own small kitchens or arrange to pay for for meals in the community dining room.

Once a month, the Salvation Army would bring “brown bags” of groceries, and set up in the dining room so residents and other local seniors could come pick one up.

I used to drive a couple of elderly neighbors there.

Rules were not strict… you had to sign in but not provide an ID or proof of age.

My friend and my neighbors thought I should take a bag, just because I was there… but I said no.

I didn’t really need it or think that would be honest, as I was under 65 at the time.

There was also a table piled with slightly outdated pies, doughnuts and bread.

I did sometimes take a loaf of bread because the Salvation Army people said it was for anybody who wanted it.

People tended to not want everything in their bags, because there were things like “commodity” canned pork… dried milk powder… or dried beans and pasta they didn’t want to cook.

So there was another table where they’d leave those things in case others wanted extra.

The owners of the building, who lived in another city and were quite well off, would show up at every food giveaway.

They’d each take a brown bag, and grab several pies…

then wait around to fill a bag with left-behind groceries.

They could buy anything they wanted at the supermarket.

I think that kind of greed is almost a mental illness.

When my kids were in scouts, they did a food drive. You should see some of the crap people donate. One popcorn envelope from an open box. A jar of pickled whit asparagus. Cans with no labels, expired things…

One Christmas my scumbag brother in law gifted everyone with toothpaste and shampoo he stole from the bread pantry/shelter where he volunteered. We all gave it all back to a different shelter.

The rat is gone: Joy said “not my cookie”, and ate the booger.
