I find myself doing something I almost never do, which is agreeing with the Big Oaf. If someone gives you a gift and you have the opportunity to thank them in person, then that can and should be perceived as a suitable expression of gratitude. But if you are on the receiving end of a thank you note after the note’s composer already thanked you in person, it reeks of “My Grandma made me do it”. It’s overkill.
Back when the bank returned your checks to you there was one year my dad sent a check to his God child. When he was going through the cancelled checks he came across hers and she had written ‘Thanks Uncle Jack’ on the memo line. He wasn’t impressed.
