Girl: Dad, what nationality are we? Man: Well, you know scruffy? We're sort of like him. Girl: So we're the human equivalent of a german shepherd with a beagle face and dachshund legs? Man: Sad, but true.
I’m trying to conjure up an image of Scruffy and it’s just not coming. A shepherd with a beagle face and dachshund legs huh? One thought does come to mind….COSMETIC SURGERY!
There’s not really such a thing as an “American face”, in the sense that there are German faces, Italian faces, Russian faces, Korean faces, and so on, but there are definitely American names: Pedro Kowalski, Tiffany Giordano, Brian Zimmerman, Andre Chang…
tedcoop, you’re right that it’ll be a long time before everybody is blended into one beige complexion, but we’re getting very near the point where “mixed race” will become, if not the norm, then at least unremarkable. When every point along the spectrum (not merely along a black/white polarity, obviously) is amply represented, the idea of being “purely” one thing or another will lose significance. Read Dr. Seuss’s “Sneetches” for an example of how this (probably, hopefully) will play out.

I’m pretty sure the kid meant race & was trying to be PC. Surely, she must know what nation she’s from.

True but NOT sad. The more mixed up the merrier, and better.
