I was the contractor for my house when I built it 16 years ago. Got it exactly the way I wanted it but supervising my subcontractors and making them do it over if they didn’t get it right.
Yeah, paint doesn’t seem to stop moisture penetration. I finally had to coat outdoor-exposed wood with epoxy to waterproof the wood. Redoing rotted wood frames and a skylight sash set me back on other projects.
I understand and accept your choice of regional identity, but speaking as a Southerner, if you are from anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line you are considered to be a “Yankee” in our eyes.

Not the same for my gates — they’re still absorbing water. Thought I had them sealed, but they still swell a bit.
