rj: how many stars are there? verne: Billions...trillions..a lot....and each of those stars could have planets that might have life. rj: so, somewhere out there could be a raccoon and a turtle on a log staring at our star. verne: Although it's unlikely life would evolve in exactly the same way. in a galaxy far, far away... verne: how about twinkies? are they everywhere? rj: no. those are unique to our world.

Me thinks one of the episodes of Star Trek covered this subject back in the 60’s.
