Or raccoons on his roof. Just had that happen two days ago. Freaked my wife out.

Soon after I rented a funky apartment, the weather turned cold, and at night I thought the place had been hit with an 18-wheeler. It took a while for the landlord to find the problem (noise was never in the daytime), it turned out that plumbing pipes in the walls were not secured to their beams.

Funny how age changes someone’s reaction to sounds in the dark.

I had a pair of cats tear into each other on the roof over my bedroom. The squalling, howling and scuffling was terrifying for someone sound asleep a second earlier. I thought the Devil himself was coming to get me.Then they rolled off into a window well, I could hear them running back and forth trying to find a way out and taking a couple of swipes at each other as they passed, I was afraid they’d come through the window. Scared the bejeezus out of me at the time, funny now.Now the only nighttime sounds I hear are the crackling of the fire in my wood stove and scratching of an occasionally mouse.

Unexpected puddles of water count, too. I’m having to replace my leaking garbage disposal that has lost it’s motor shaft seal and I’m the one designated for replacing it.

Living in an old house in the middle of the woods, I know EXACTLY how he feels. Just glad we weren’t in the house when Floyd dropped a tree on it.

Our house creaks and groans mostly when it is very cold outside…

So true, like when the furnace moans and refuses to light when it is zero out, and it’s 10:30 on a Sunday night.
