Even when this strip was new, I doubt half the people reading it were old enough to remember when those kind of hats were very common and expected to be worn by business men. It was so long ago that now when you see one, it’s thought of as a silly costume or hipster affectation.
Instead of saying anything at all, Mom could have assumed Dad was being flirtatious, and slipped quickly and quietly out of her things,(thinking that ‘the boys’ were outside playing, of course),happily cannon balled into the bath, WITH “Dad” …
and the only text the last panel would THEN have contained …is a VERY LONG, HYPER-EXTENDED shriek kkkkkkk !!!
The last panel is GENIUS, though I would have loved to see what’s next. Anyway, I see I am not the only one to notice that mom assumes that’s her husband. It would meant that she see Hobbes the way Calvin does. I don’t think the hat OR the bubbles would be enough to be THAT confusing.

I love the facial expressions in the final panel. Similar expressions but they convey differing emotions.

But . . . the Hobbes Mom sees is nowhere near the size of Dad. It’s not easy, being a realist AND a comics fan.

I had meant to paste this one yesterday. I’m surprised someone hadn’t beaten me to it. Where’s commentator Hobbes?

Isn’t Dad considerably larger than Hobbes- as least the way Mom would see Hobbes?

The hat wasn’t needed. Hobbes disguised as bubbles would have been convincing enough.xxx

Hmm. Wouldn’t Hobbes float? Or if waterlogged, sink? Wouldn’t the hat float? Isn’t the hat much bigger than Hobbles? Not a pretty picture.
