I hope that Lizzie knows that being shy is easier than she thinks. Some people (like myself) don’t know what to say to another person beyond ’Hello."
My husband is the younger of 2 brothers. His older brother is garrulous and popular while Michael is so shy that he won’t go to most gatherings with me.
In college I was on work study. I went from class to work through the back door. As I was working in the back room, I could here a couple gals thru the partly open doorway. They were talking about guys. Eventually they mentioned me – and how both had tried to speak to me, but I wouldn’t make eye contact, and I was obviously too shy. [I had no interest in the two I’d heard talking – they were obviously just there for their MRS degree.] As I’m working I thought about that and realized I should change. It wasn’t easy. The first girl I asked out nicely told me she wasn’t available on that date – and I wanted to ask about another day, but was way too shy to do more than say “Oh,” and walk off. But I did work on it, and now people incorrectly think I’m not shy – I speak to people anywhere. But I still have strong butterflies in my belly, I have to force myself to look people in the eye. If I were rich, I would be called eccentric, but really it’s just Asperger’s.So it’s still not easy, every time I speak to a stranger I try to come up with something to say, but usually their response is different than I expected, so I struggle with keeping the conversation going. On here it’s easy to talk – and some people even have conversations.
