I hate it when people use the shortest day of winter as the “first” day of winter. It’s like the seasons start on specific dates.

But the Sun has also reached its closest approach nearly three weeks ago and is receding into the distance until July, also.

From what I can tell, the “official” winter does have the most chance of snow and the coldest weather, i.e., December through March.
And about length of days… I always find it startling how rapidly the days get shorter after summer solstice. Never checked exactly what the exact numbers are…

Up here in New England, it’s three minutes extra per day, and in Fairbanks, Alaska, it’s a whopping 7 minutes per day.
