The Buckets by Greg Cravens for February 03, 2016

I wish cars were like, crazy cheap. Y'know, fifty bucks or so. Yeah, but then, how would they pay people? Minors to dig up ore, guys at steel mills, and machine parts makers, and truck drivers to deliver new cars, and sales men and women? Uh... Well, you wouldn't have to pay 'em that much, if they could all get cars for fifty bucks.

That was pretty much what Henry Ford did. He made cars cheaper, and paid his workers enough that they could afford to buy them.

I paid $30 for a 56 Chrysler in ’68. Spent more in oil and gas after that.

I hope to take driving lessons this year. I got my provisional driving licence about 2 weeks ago.
But that doesn’t mean I want to get a car straight away.

My family once owned a ‘64 chevy where the floor of the back seat had rusted through. Everyone in the family knew where the hole was and avoided it, but one night we were giving a friend of my sister a ride home and she didn’t know about the hole until her foot went through it. She pulled her foot back in panic and discovered that her shoe was gone. Our family spent about a half-hour searching that stretch of road for the missing shoe until one of us thought to check the hole in the floor and found the shoe still caught in the hole. The next day my dad (an excellent backyard mechanic) put in a new sheet metal floor for the car.
