Well, they were told to pick “dignified” names. The crew picked the rest of the names themselves or acquiesced to suggestions (Julian Sheer suggested Columbia and Mike Collins said “I don’t have any better ideas.” But when the most experienced astronaut in the office says he’s naming his LM “Casper” NOBODY is gonna say “Don’t be silly, John.”
