When I was a tour guide on a double decker bus. We go by Columbus Circle where there is a statue of Columbus. I would tell that joke. Sometimes, I would hear groans from the people. So, I would tell people that this is a New York joke folks.

I’m reminded of a bit (by Flip Wilson, IIRC) about the reaction of the natives to being discovered. There’s first a rhetorical question (whose precise phraseology I can’t remember) about going around discovering people who don’t want to be discovered, followed by the warning, “Y’all better discover your @$$ outta here!” Perhaps unsurprisingly, I can’t find this bit on the web.
