Richard's Poor Almanack by Richard Thompson It's National Poetry Month The trick to poetry is learning how to recognize it, especially from a distance, so you can avoid it if need be. Which one of these is poetry? Poetry is all around us! Here are three places where there's poetry. Can you match the type of palm to the right venue? 1. Sonnet 1. Villanelle 3. Pantoum Can you identify these poetic personages? Erato is- 1. A printing error. 2. Muse of lyric poetry. 3. Brand of athletic shoe. This is- 1. A Raven. 2. The Raven. 3. The 25th blackbird. J. Alfred Prufrock is- 1. A guy in a poem 2. A Groucho Marx role. 3. Fred Flintstones other neighbor. Okay! Let's read a poem here's one- Upon Julia's Clothes By Robert Herrick When as in silks my Julia goes, then, then, methinks, how sweetly flows that liquidation of her clothes. Next, when I cast my eyes, and see, that brave vibration each way free, oh, how that glittering taketh me! This poem is about- 1. Julia Roberts? 2. A laundry product. 3. A wet T-shirt contest. 4. Why, five feet, of course. Every versifier knows that! The problem is that the majority of poets are not versifiers and the majority of versifiers are not poets. Paradoxical, ain’t it?

A pentameter is about 16 feet actually nearly 200 inches in length. It is impossible to convert metric measurements into English standard because the French Revolution occurred so long ago that the original documents are no longer legible.
