Yup, there were Roy Rogers restaurants, owned by Marriot Corp. The restaurants started in my hometown of Falls Church Va or as we sometimes called it, Falls Gulch.and used the actor/singer’s name as a trademark. They expanded up the east coast before Marriot sold them to Hardee’s who sold them to somebody else. After closing most of them, the chain was revivied. There are about 50 of them, in four or five states. Two Roy Rogers are in Loudoun Co VA, in Leesburg.
No, us kids who grew up watching those shows went to Korea, Vietnam, and many other exotic places, while the rich kids became politicians and screwed up the country….
I’ve wondered how Dale Evans felt about being billed behind Trigger. Interesting that Roy and Dale’s marriage was his third and her fourth but they made it work for fifty years. I appreciate how Roy treated Indians with dignity in his films and TV show instead of just blasting away at them.
Little known fact : The horse statue on top of the scoreboard at Sports Authority Field, home of the Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos, is a 30 foot model of Trigger. Roy Rogers allowed the team to use Trigger as a model but the Broncos had to give the statue a different name, which they did. The statue’s name, as chosen in a fan contest, is Bucky Bronco.A picture of the statue can be seen here.
I knew Trigger was the name of Roy Rogers’ horse, not through TV or movies, but through an Elton John song, titled Roy Rogers; it was on his Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road album. Trigger is mentioned in the song.
Thanks to TV I’ve seen some of the Durango Kid movies. Pretty good but I like Tim Holt movies. He was an honest rodeo cowboy who would rather do that than become an A-list actor.
