Toby, I get it. You don't want to clean your room. You think it'll take hours. Yeah. What if I save you hours of time, and cost myself only a little of my time? Would that help? Yes! Put the comic book away don't read it first. I'm gonna count the numbers of underpants I see on the floor 1...2...3... If you look at your phone one more time, I'll read your texts out loud.

YES!!! Man I wish I’d had this strip posted on the fridge when my kids were that age.

LOL! My line was “Go clean it now, OR I will clean it for you.” They only made the mistake of letting me clean their rooms once because I was very zealous when I did it and “important” things were trashed or donated. I didn’t demand clean rooms often and usually allowed them to live in their mess in peace. Maybe every couple of months. That way they didn’t feel too harassed and the mess didn’t get too deep between cleanings.

Somehow, this reminds me of when I was living in Milan…As son as the kids left for school, I decided that I needed to dust the books on the top shelf of our floor to ceiling (12 foot) bookcase. I borrowed a huge ladder from the super, and climbed up, pulled out a volume of Shakespeare, opened it, and there was suddenly a knock at the door…there was the super with my daughter. The bus had dropped her off at noon and I wasn’t out front to meet her. He took his ladder and the dust continued to accumulate until we moved a year later.
