Growing up in the 60s in a small rural Midwestern town, we were bombarded with the message that every boy could grow up to be president of the United States—and everyone should grow up to be president of something. I was an overachiever in those days; it took me 40 years to realise that I’ll never write a book, cut an album, or make a movie—and that’s OK. If we were all famous, who would applaud?
From “The Music Man”: “But, darlin’—when a woman has a husbandAnd you’ve got none,Why should she take advice from you?Even if you can quote Balzac and ShakespeareAnd all them other highfalutin’ Greeks.”
I’ve never cared for R and J. I did see the Baz Lurman version, some excellent performances. They made “Longsword” a brand of firearm. Everybody carried at least a dagger in those days (and often a spoon, as inns didn’t necessarily provide any utensils to eat the food they served); many men carried at least a short sword. So yeah, people went around armed…but of course to stab somebody you have to get a lot closer than in firing a gun.
Lurman’s version takes some getting used to, having Shakespeare just explode off the screen like that! But my younger students love it. And John Leguizamo is something as “Tybalt, Prince of Cats.”

Depends on your definition of “hero” is, Sally. No, I’m not quoting Voltaire!

I was aware of Shroeder playing a Grand Piano when Lucy threw his piano in the Kite-eating tree.

There are 2 kinds of people in this world. Those who are heroes and those who aren’t.

Where have all the good men goneAnd where are all the Gods?Where’s the street-wise HerculesTo fight the rising odds?
Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed?Late at night I toss and I turnAnd I dream of what I need
I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero‘Til the end of the nightHe’s gotta be strongAnd he’s gotta be fastAnd he’s gotta be fresh from the fight
