Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for May 29, 2016
Transcript:
Danae: Hmm... Hey, I was just wondering...why are bluebirds blue? Joe: Because they mostly eat blueberries. It's their best defense against cats. Danae: Oh. Wait... What? Joe: Well, as everyone knows, cats hate blueberries so their color lets all cats know that they're full of blueberries and then cats leave them alone. Kate: ! Danae: Umm... Hmm... Finally! Something that makes sense!! Kate: Her future therapist will be secretly thanking you for providing steady income. Joe: *sigh* Ok, ok...but I just couldn't resist. Danae: Hey...will eating blueberries turn me blue?

Wiley Miller’s stuff does appear to owe a certain amount to Watterson’s Calvin & Hobbes, sometimes. Calvin’s father would do this.

It’s up there with Calvin’s Dad’s explanation of things like bridge weight limits and sunsets.

Actually, there are some birds that get the pigments in their feathers from what they eat. That’s why flamingos are pink and cardinals are bright red.

To feverjr – yes, eating too many carrots will turn your skin orange – not a deep orange, but still orange-ish.
magicwalnut almost 9 years ago

All these years drinking blue berry juice didn’t make me a blue nose. But did get da blues in the night. So Danae will have something to look forward to; an Kate will probably be correct. But poor Dad will regret the day he made one two many cute tricks.

My Dad told me that if I put salt on a bird’s tail, it couldn’t fly. I spent a full day trying to sneak up on a bird with the salt shaker.

Calvin’s father also does quite a bit of warping of Calvin’s young mind. (I refer to Calvin & Hobbes.)

I know someone who turned orange from eating too many carrots, and my son’s bum turned blue from too many blueberries when he was a baby so why not?

Mahonias’ have black berries and yellow flowers. They are loved by blackbirds. Mr. Blackbird has a black coat and a yellow beak. I have seen a male teaching his chicks about mahonia berries. True.

“I wonder if one of her heroes is L. Ron Hubbard. Napoleon certainly did.” My comment was on the sequence of the sentences. At first glance it seems that Napoleon is making a comment on L. R. Hubbard. Elron may have been a fair-to middlin’ sci-fi writer, but he was a questionable theologian.
