I had an uncle who lost both of his legs in Viet Nam. He hated prosthetics – they were extremely uncomfortable – so he just went with no legs. People were always a little nervous the first time meeting him, but talk to him for just a minute, and you found out how wonderful he really was. The first time my husband was to meet him I gave him the standard warning. My uncle outdid himself: when he arrived at my parents’ house, instead of leap-frogging to the back of the car, pushing his chair out, hopping on and coming in, he skipped the chair and walked in on his hands! He died in 2000 and I still miss him.
