Speakin’ of radiation, a house right down the street was found to be swimming in radon after the last owner died of cancer. Downstairs neighbor’s getting treated for cancer now. The next couple weeks should be interesting.

When my family first moved to western Colorado in the early 70’s there was a whole lot of noise about all the homes built with uranium mill tailings for fill material around foundations. A lot of folks were coming down sick after so many years of that behavior. Fortunately, they stopped that practice and, being forewarned, we were able to avoid buying a home from that period.

When I was a teen, I found a circular clip on the side of the road.Around the rim is said “US RADIUM CORP” and it glowed in the dark all the time. The front side was thick plexiglass. The Geiger counter said it was radioactive.Being dumb teenagers, my brother and I pried it apart to see what made it tick. The back had a plate of lead between the radiation and the person wearing it, and the glowing part was in a shallow cup. After that, it never glowed again. We never found the radioactive material – I assume it must have been radon gas.Another story. In high school, I had a watch with radium dials. My science teacher checked it with his Geiger counter, and more radiation came out the back than the front. I never suffered any ill effects.

With those masks, it doesn’t really matter who’s bald, does it?

Relax, Binkley. Think of it in the way of the East: mourn at birth, because then you know that you will inevitably die….
