Well, back in the early ’60s we were actually told (along with hiding under our desks and lying down in a ditch) that before we entered the fall-out shelter (in our town an elementary school built in the ’30s) to “brush off any fall-out”.
During Chernobyl, I was living in Vienna. The health officials gave their fall-back suggestion that we should boil our water. That, if anything, would concentrate the radioactive materials, at least slightly.
Back in the late 60s, I was part of response team for a nuclear attack on Boston. This crew of about 7-8 were like Army short timers from Ft. Devens, MA. I remember we had 100 ft. of plastic tunneling to keep us out of the fallout, and two suits of contamination proof suits. Boston would be well protected by our response.
What a great propaganda slogan! All the short-term survivors will immediately join the Civil Sweeping Corps (CSC), which will keep them occupied until their noses fall off….

Before I sweep the immediate area, I fully intend to swiffer any nuclear fallout from my kitchen floor.
