I’m aging myself here, but when I was a kid in NY, school started the day after Labor Day and ended the last weekday of June. The only time I got out early was the day I graduated high school and that was in the middle of June.
These days, teachers say there isn’t enough time to teach kids anything and that’s because the kids are let out the middle of May and start again the middle of August, approximately.
i was surprised when my nephews university year started in late August. in the dark ages when i went to university we started classes the week after Labour Day. the week OF labour day was for Freshman Orientation aka Frosh Week.

In Georgia, kids are lucky if they get the whole first week of August before going back to school.
But in California where I grew up, school almost always started the day after Labor Day.

In Seattle the school year starts the Wed after Labor day. This year they may be on strike so parents can lose there sanity for a bit longer
